As many of you will be aware, we recently ran a trial of audio recordings of popular magazines. These were made available by the RNIB, and included many titles that can be found in High Street newsagents. The recordings were included at the end of the Messenger each week.
Once the trial had been completed, we decided to undertake a survey of our listeners to ascertain how popular the recordings had been. The survey took the form of telephone interviews conducted with a large (50%), representative sample of our listenership. The results were as follows:
- 45 listeners were contacted, of whom 36 had heard the RNIB recordings.
- Our interviewees were asked to rate their enthusiasm for this new feature on a scale of 1 – 5 (low to high). Overall, the response was very positive with 60% giving a rating of 4 or 5.
- When asked if they would prefer listening each week to several magazines in their entirety or selections from various magazines, 67% of those who had an opinion on the matter favoured the selection option.
- 16 different publications were included in the trial. The most popular proved to be Woman’s Own, Woman’s Weekly, Gardeners World and Country Living which each received 5 votes. Kitchen Garden, BBC Wildlife and Country Man also fared well with 4 votes each.
In conclusion, it was felt that the trial was successful enough to justify incurring the moderate charge from the RNIB in order to make the magazine recordings a regular feature of the Mid Devon Messenger in the future. Watch this space!
